Radium gives off three different and distinct disintegration products or rays designated as Alpha, Beta and Gamma rays.
The Alpha rays are infinitesimal particles charged with positive electricity and endowed with high ionizing power. These rays move with a velocity of about 12,000 miles a second and are absorbed within a short distance of their flight. They have little or no penetrating power and can be deflected by a thin sheet of paper. Being charged positively, they are attracted by the negative pole of the magnet. The Beta rays are electrons, negatively charged,
